UPDATE: Please
help KISEP if you can - contact us at kisepkibera@yahoo.com
Funding has been discontinued. All KISEP programs are
now in jeopardy. The schools no longer have teachers, and funding
for the feeding program has run out. KISEP teachers and administrators
have not been paid for months, and it is now no longer possible to
run the schools with no funds. The parents of the children in the
schools are unable to pay fees, and the Government of Kenya has no
funds for non-formal schools such as those developed by KISEP. KISEP
is a group of community organizations, helping each other, and trying
to build their own communities, to improve the lives of people within
their communities. Please help in any way you can.
Who are we?
Kibera SLUM Education Programme (KISEP) is a coalition of four Community Based Organizations (CBO's) namely: Mashimoni Kambi muru Ushirika wa Usafi (MKUU), Lindi Ushirika wa Usafi na Maendeleo (LUUM), Kibera Silanga Ushirika Group (KISUG) and Gatwekera Usafi, Umoja na Maendeleo (GUUM)
It began in 2001 after a Participatory Urban Appraisal (PUA) done by Oxfam GB/Community members, which found that 75% of school age children were out of school. It therefore focused on Education.
KISEP was formally registered as a local Non-Governmental Organization in the year 2004.
VISION: We aspire to have a self-reliant community in Kibera.
MISSION: KISEP exists to promote and agitate for quality of life of its members particularly the disadvantaged children through community education, resource mobilization, lobbying and networking.
AREA OF OPERATIONAL / GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE:
KISEP operates in five villages of the ten villages of Kibera, namely: Mashimoni, Kambi muru, Lindi, Silanga, and Gatwekera though our office is situated in Mashimoni village.
